SOUTH LONDON NEWS

HAUNTED NIGHTCLUB
Bermondseys 'Mr T's nightclub has been voted South London's most haunted
venue. The site dates back to 1483 when it was originally used as almshouses for the town's larger ladies. During this time, a notably large lady of parish, Bessy Thighs starved to death in one of the rooms and is said to walk the corridors of the almshouses up to it's destruction in 1941 during the blitz. A local diarist, Samuel Rillington Place wrote in the local parish news of in 1721 'I sette me downe to eatte. on inspectione I founde the cupboarde bare. A legge of hamm, an orange, a quaile, two dates, an egge, three hobnobs and somme garpes had vanish'd. Bessy's ghost was aboute her business' Despite the history of the site. In 1952, Mr Stears (the present Owners great grandfather) renovated the property and opened up a nightclub called 'Brief Encounter's', one of a chain of Saff London Clubs he owned inspired by the films of David Lean.
It was around this time that Gary Stears, at the time a young lad of 12 started experiencing strange happenings. He spent many nights at his grand fathers other venues including 'Oliver Twists' in Penge, 'In Which We Serve' in Crystal Palace, but 'Brief Encounter's' stood out as different. Strange ghostly happenings continued and Gary on taking over the venue in 1987 was advised by local medium Doris Hare to change the name to 'T's, which represented the 20th letter of the Druid lettering system. However the strange phenomenon did not cease. Strange writing, often obscene - would appear on the toilet walls overnight. There was this terrible smell coming from the urinals and strange wing shaped ectoplasm started to block the ladies toilets. After the night-club was featured on Newsroom Southeast' in 1993, many of the countries leading exorcists have visited the sight, yet still no one can come up with any answers to the following mysteries: The strange grunting and moaning heard coming from 'T's carpark after dark. The unexplained cold spot felt near the fire escape next to the cigarette machine, especially during the months between November and February. The evil force which takes over the male clientele which results in a uncontrolled outburst of violence and the continued ghostly chanting of 'Leave it Tel, it ain't worth it' The poltergeist activity causing the bus shelter glass outside the club to be smashed. The pool of ectoplamic fluid, which appears outside the entrance to the club and although removed, reappears the following night still foul smelling and full of vegetable like matter. ARE YOU A OLD ROMANTIC Blokes - remember this simple rule when it comes to women
If she is between 18 & 29 - she should be refered to affectionatly as your 'BIRD'
Women between 30 & 40 are referred to as a 'DORIS'
Women over 40 are given the utmost respect and refered to by their collective name of 'MUM'
SUMMER FATE
Another successful Plumstead Summer fate took place last Saturday. The event was opened by the Rev. Freeman Hardee Willis who opened the event with our own Saff London prayer Our Father, who art in Belmarsh Give us this day our daily wad And forgive those who grassed against us And deliver onto us some videos VHS not Betamax mind And lager tops will be served For now and forever Alright! One of the most popular attractions was an idea based on last years not so successful 'Bring and Buy' sale. The new concept of a 'Fence and Buy' sale at last has proved very popular |
|
The idea of putting local 24 year old 'Fat Dave' in charge of the fairground rides, once again proved popular, especially the introduction of the silicon bouncy castle and lager flume ride. Although the promise of a white water rapid ride experience was somewhat of a let down when it was discovered the main concept of the ride included the use of an old tea tray, a hose pipe, a packet of Persil automatic and the use of the staircase in the Larner Road tower blocks.
The Red Arrows were again a real highlight of the afternoon and no one seemed to mind when the rain meant the display had to move in doors. The Erith Classic Car Club had one of the best static displays seen at the fate in years. On show were classics such as a 1991 Ford Orion Ghia and an unusual XR2I on the 'D' plate which came with fitted ski rack on the roof. Not that you would ever see it used to carry ski's, However it can be seen being used to carry snooker cues around in leather effect cases from pub to pub in the Bexley area. WOOLWICH THE GATEWAY TO PLUMSTEAD The multi million pound B3467 roadlink which gives businesses direct road access to Plumstead has helped cut unemployment in the area. A wealth of new international companies are hoped to move to Saff London and firms already opened up in the last few months include 'Starburger' and 'Arif's Mini Mart'. The new retail park set to open in November will see the introduction of one of the largest Wicker and Cane superstores in the country, with the promise of late night opening to 10pm on Friday's for all your last minute Wicker needs. BRITISH CHAMPS The 7th National Subbuttio championships will be held at Thamesmead Working Men's Club on Sunday 14th August. There is a new category added to this year's competition at the request of the local members. The 'Sunday Pub Team Subbuttio Challenge'. Belvedere hope to win this, especially now they will be using a set of beer bellied little figures. They hope to repeat their 5 -1 win over a somewhat depleted team from Dartford which consisted of 9 subbutto figures, a plastic farm animal and a Cadbury's Cream Egg. The Thamesmead team hope to improve their chances by making the pitch as real as possible. To simulate this, a number of toy cars are pushed up and down the pitch to create that Sunday league match directly after the car boot sale effect. PECKHAM TRIANGLE Once again one of the mysteries of the world, the Peckham Triangle has seen some unexplained events happen over the last few years. The Triangle, which runs from Rye Lane, along the Lower Road up to New Cross, has witnessed many unanswered disappearances over the last few months including unexplained disappearances of electrical goods including tv's and car stereos. The most recent report was last month when a group of Lweisham women woke up after a night out to discover their knickers had vanished.
